Greetings and Happy Holidays, fellow CCers!

I'm designing a wedding cake for a co-worker and dear friend of mine and her fiance, for a February wedding.
The bride- and groom-to-be have been great to work with in planning. I am doing their cake @ cost as a wedding present, as they're on a VERY tight budget.
This is the second wedding for my friend. Let's just say that we all want this wedding to extra special, since her first wedding was far less than the stellar day it should have been.
My idea is to surprise them a little; I'd like to have something in theme as the base for the cake, instead of just a plate or platter. I was thinking about scouring second-hand stores for a library card catalog file, 2- or 4-drawers. Can't find one in town to save my life...and the few that have been on eBay have been prohibitively expensive for my purpose!
Perhaps I should do something like a "dummy" cake version of said drawers.
Now the question is, how do I do that on a styro dummy? I have no experience with them at all.
Can anyone pm or email me with any helpful suggestions?
Thank you all in advance!
~ Scott

That is sweet that you want to surprise them with something different. Here is another bump!

Happy New Year, fellow CCer's!!

I know that my original posting was poorly timed, right during the holiday insanity/rush...so I didn't expect much in the way of replies right away.

Thanks to those who offered "bumps"!

Here's the kicker...I need to get started on this project by the 10th. Can anyone out there offer some basic instructions for doing styrofoam dummy cakes by then?

Thank you all for the help, the inspiration, and the added drive to do something better each time I begin a project.

Will keep you all posted as things progress...

Here is a long shot of an idea.

Blocks of styrofoam put together in a carboard box the size that you need the base to be. The styrofoam will give it the sturdiness it will need to hold a wedding cake. The outside box can be made to look like wood by covering it with the wood grain contact paper. Before permanently closing this box fasten or glue handles similar to the ones you have seen on library drawers. In the index holder of the handle you could put something that would pertain to them and their marriage such as Non-Fiction. To make the front more 3D you could cut a smaller rectangle than the front of the box having the grain of the wood going the opposite direction. Around the smaller rectangle put a small thin black tape (available at art stores). That should give it depth. For a two drawer you would cut two smaller rectangles and attach handles and fronts the same way.

This may not make any sense to you. It is just something that is coming up as I type. I hope it will help get the ball rolling with better suggestions.

Good Luck.
