I played with the airbrush last night- pretty cool. Any ideas for a cake project that will help me learn? Thanks!

I suggest rolling out some gumpaste and letting it dry. Playing with a flat surface is a good place to start. Try different masking techniques and get used to how it works spraying on the texture. Than stand a piece up at 45* and than vertical and practice spraying that way.

Once you have some basic skills down get ready to spend even more money on not only gumpaste and cake decorating supplies but now airbrush supplies and different masking stencils from art stores.

It never ends but oh what fun!

what about clouds in the background, they are easy to do and look great. use a paper towel and pick at the edge to create cloud formations, kind of bubbly, then starting at the top of the cake airbrush over the edge of the papertowel, move the paper towel, changing the angle a little and spray again, working your way down to the horizon. then spray the grass or sea or land straight across. voila, a lovely background scene.

circles would be next, and spheres. getting the freehand circle down is hard. but important. Than shading for a good looking sphere.

When I first got my airbrush someone suggested that I buy a children's coloring book and 'color' it in with my airbrush to practice trigger control, etc. It was a great help!

You can make some simple templets from cardboard or cardstock, that would make fancy borders or picture frame look, you just lay on a crusted buttercream cake and spray the edges, nice effect. The main thing is pressure control, and getting a smooth look, not a choppy one.
