What is the best way to achieve facial details on mmf figures? I asked a couple of ladies whom have very beautiful faces on their figures but I guess its a closely guarded secret cause I have recieved no response. I tried using my paste colors but I didnt do so well so I have just stuck to bc icing eyes and mouths like the santa in my pics. Maybe I need different brushes? Or is there a special paint or maybe edible markers? Any tips would be appreciated. I'm not looking to copy anyones figures I just would like some pointers so that I can achieve the look that I want.

Hiya guys,
Have you tried artists watercolor brushes maybe a size 00 should suffice. It's very tiny, and it comes to a lovely point. I would forego the paste colors and use those liquid colors that they sell at the store(I know, I know they are cheap) but they serve their purpose and are the correct consistency for painting details onto fondant or gumpaste. No mixing is necessary, which is nice. But that is the only thing I would use them for other than making red velvet cake.

OK, 00 brushes with a good point, sounds good, but what kind of paint? I don't really know what is meant by "liquid paint". I'll go to the hobby shop and look around. Is this the paint used in kindergarden?

I think good artist's brushes are very important. I have painted faces with all sorts of things, chalk, dusts, pastes & have found it is just a case of practice. I battle with faces too, but am getting better. I love painting with Americolor. Some people have a natural aptitude for painting faces, unfortunately I am one of the strugglers, but get there in the end.

I've heard that you can use everclear and the gel colors to paint on fondant and gumpaste. The everclear evaporates and leaves the color so it has a quicker drying time. I haven't tried it yet. Mostly because I never think to go to the liquor store when I'm running errands! icon_smile.gif

I have made a few fondant and gumpaste figures... for my polar bears and Capt Underpants, I used edible markers (Wilton)..for my ballerina , I used gel food colour mixed with a bit of clear vanilla extract to thin it slightly and painted on with an extremely fine paintbrush.
One thing though, if you use the gel colours straight, they will not dry properly..they will remain tacky so that is why people use it mixed with alcohol (I think)..perhaps someone more experienced than me can comment.

I use either food color markers or I use non-toxic markers from the scrapbook aisle in the crafts stores, the ones that have a brush tip on one end and a pen tip on the other. I forgot the brand name but I can go find it later. Lots of big-name cake people use them too and since they're non-toxic I use those a lot for fine detail. That's what I used on the faeries for my Irish wedding cake at the OSSAS. There were three faeries on the cake, and they were each about 2 to 2 1/2 inches tall, so you can see I got some good detail.

Hi there, Ive been making figures for the last few months and Aine2s website tutorial on How to make a face was invaluable.

Here is the link http://www.lorraine-icingonthecake.co.uk/masterclass/face-howto.htm

Make sure you buy really good and really small brushes and just practice. It took me a while for it to resemble a human! But I feel I learn something with every little person I make. I use my americolor colours to paint with too.

Hope that helps and would love to see what you create

Cheers
Kathryn
