I did a cake for a retirement party where the "theme" was italian. Most of the decorations had wine bottles and grapes, etc. My DH thinks I should have made the grapes larger? I posted my picture and one person wrote in saying that overlapping might have given it a 3D effect. What is your opinion? I catered the whole party and I think I was really tired by the end of the night and just couldn't think of what else to do with the cake. I wasn't totally satisfied, but I had to stop and go to sleep!
I just took a good look at the cake and here are a couple of observations: First, the cake looks awesome!! Yes, you could make the grapes a little bigger next time, OR you could add more clusters to the grapevines. You can also overpipe the grapes to add a 3D effect, but that can be tricky when dealing with things like grapes -- overpiping looks better on lines (like borders) than on dots for some reason -- on dots it looks like you messed up and now have to fix all of them. For someone who was sooo tired, I think you did a fabulous job!!
Well, I like your cake! I don't think there's anything wrong with it.
You could have alternately, but not necessarily, done any of the following:
made larger grapes?
piped more leaves on the vines?
intertwined the vines more?
added more tiny tendrils?
or any number of other things, but really, I think it's very nice just like it is. Very nice job, and I like the basket weave touch, too.
The cake is beautiful! It's a lovely design and you got great color on your grapes!
Aside from making the grapes bigger, a cluster of grapes is not really a triangle. It starts narrow at the vine, gets wider right away, then tapers to a point. If you were to break the cluster down into triangles, imagine your cluster as a large triangle - just add a smaller triangle to the top, pointed toward the vine.
I think this cake looks great, I cannot believe you catered this whole event and still produced such an awesome cake. We all always look at our cakes and think of what we could have done better. Yes, you could have done larger grapes, you know for next time, but I think it looks great as is.
