I've never made sugar cookies iced with royal icing. I'm used to the delicious cream cheese icing, although they're not decorated pretty (just slathered on the cookie). I'd love to try decorating cookies with royal icing (or glaze) but I don't know how good they will taste. I think royal icing is nasty and don't know how it could taste good on a sugar cookie. Do any of you do anything to make it taste good, or are your cookies more for show?
Both Toba Garrett's glace or Antonia's royal icing would work great. They both dry hard to the touch but aren't rock hard. They are still soft in the middle. Depends on the look you're going for. Toba's glace will dry shiny and Antonia's RI will dry to a matte finish. You can add some flavoring to both for the taste you're looking for (lemon, orange, almond extract or vanilla).
