Ok I bought some shimmer dust and tired using it on some fondant. I have heard to mix it with a liquid and then apply. What kind of consistency should this be when I apply and what kind of brush do you use to put it on? I am trying to experiment with this and am having no luck! I love the look that some of these cakes look like and I want to do this. When I do it it comes out in clumps. Please Help!
Thanks so much!
if you're talking about wiltons shimmer dust, you can sprinkle it on a cake for added sparkle, but that's about it. if you have lustre dust, that is the stuff you mix with an alcohol based liquid such as lemon extract, almond extract or you can use like vodka. i usually make mine the consistency of a thin paint. but, you can't do this with wiltons shimmer dust, it just doesn't work like that, sorry. hope this helps
hiya angel and welcome to c.c.
With lustre dusts or petal dusts you can either use them dry with a good quality watercolor brush (can get that at the hobby store) or you can mix it with vodka or alcohol based extracts like lemon or vanilla (make sure it's alcohol based and not water based)
Tap some of your lustre dust onto a saucer or plate and then with the paintbrush add the liquid and mix til you get the consistency of tempura paint or thinner like watercolor paint. You have to keep adding alcohol because it keeps evaporating. but that's how it works.
I am sorry I meant Luster dust. I do use the shimmer dust alot, sorry its been a long day!
