hey everyone... I'm making a 1/4 sheet cake this afternoon for someones birthday. I normally try to make my cakes (all sizes/shapes) about 4 inches tall but my sister says sheet cakes are only expected to be about 2 inches tall. What do you think? I only have one 1/4 sheet dec preferred pan and I'm in a hurry so I don't want to have to make another one! Your thoughts, please!

I can't say I've ever seen one 4 in. high. I would say 2 inches.

Yeah, sheet cakes are usually only made 2 inches high unless you tort it, then in that case it could abe up to 2.5 inches. If you really need a lot of cake, then you can do 2-layers (around 4 inches). But common practice is a 1-layer sheet cake.

When I use my 11x15 pan and use about 1.5 mixes each for 2 layers it comes to about 4 inches once I fill. It is a huge amount of cake and is very heavy and will feed a lot of people. If you don't need a lot of cake you may want to just torte or have one layer.

I've usually seen 2.5-3 inches high. But if you so choose to make it 4", you could definately charged more because of the servings increase.

I'm with vww104... I made a two layer 11 x15 for a shower and it was a huge cake (which we wanted).

However, I think the "normal" expectation is around 2", like the sheet cakes from Sam's, etc.,which usually aren't filled.

Thanks everyone for your input! You've saved me a lot of time! It only needs to serve around 15-20 people so I'm going to stick with two inches and torte it to hopefully get about 2.5! Thanks again!
