I made cake balls for the first time today and LOVE them!! They don't look very pretty but taste soooo good. I used left over cake and instead of using flavored creamer, used raspberry flavored syrup (the kind for espresso). I followed the instructions in the article and it turned out GREAT! I just tried one and really like it. They are a bit ugly but taste soo good. I love this site!!! icon_biggrin.gificon_biggrin.gif

Has anyone else tried using a flavored syrup?

I've used the coconut and caramel flavored syrups. I also added some buttercream to bind them together. Did you roll and freeze before dipping? I didn't do it the first time and when I dipped they were not pretty.

I tried the raspberry and the hazelnut syrup, they turned out great. I did add some buttercream in each recipe.

Mine were kind of bad looking at first, too. Then I had a "lightbulb" moment, and started using the drip tray to make them. dunce.gif Now they're very pretty!

Also, I roll and freeze first too.

I did freeze the balls though not very long. I have my freezer set to zero so just froze while my chocolate was melting. I think they were extra ugly looking because I just balled them up really quick and didn't try to make it pretty. You can see my finger imprints. icon_lol.gif After dipping I put back in freezer for about 10 minutes and then stored it in the fridge.

Ugly is sometimes the best tasting icon_wink.gif Think about fudge and brownies.... they never come out completely perfectly square (unless you are on Food Network lol) but they still taste delicious! icon_smile.gif

Glad the article helped you with these and glad they turned out great for you on your first try icon_smile.gif

I plan on making some tonight for christmas gifts but may have to wait as my daughter is home with the flu today so maybe I'll leave her home with daddy and I'll head out to the grocery store and try to find this syrup stuff yall are ravin about icon_wink.gif

It is in the coffee isle. Usually close to where the creamers are.

Check if you local Cash and Carry or United Grocers sells to the public (for those who don't have a business license). Our local Cash and Carry sells to the public. You can find great deals there. A bottle of syrup costs about 3 bucks and it's the size of a wine bottle. At the grocery store, you get less than 1/2 that for the same price or more. Plus the CC or UG has a whole aisle of different flavors and varieties.

I also found a container of sanding sugar for 4 dollars. It's a mix of a bunch of colors, but it's still a good price and I can't find sanding sugar here unless I go to a special baking store. (I think it was about 2 pounds).

I don't have either of those types of places. I have a Super Walmart in the next state over (only about 30 minutes away to that one) and a Sam's Club about an hour away or more... locally all I have is the grocery stores (Food Lion, Giant, Acme, Safeway) and a regular walmart that sells extras like milk, bread, juice, and some frozen stuff but no where near what the Super Walmart sells.

Oh and if I can't find this do you think the flavored syrup for chocolate and strawberry milk and ice cream topping (Like Hershey's chocolate Syrup) would work just as good?

Ok well I went to Acme and I found these syrups in Hazelnut, Raspberry, and Vanilla. So I bought Hazelnut and Raspberry. I also found a new Hershey's Syrup over at Food Lion. It's Doulce' De' Lechea I probably spelled that wrong but yeah lol... it's the caramel stuff we've been making by heating the can for hours lol... There is a cake in the oven as we speak and I'll update tomorrow with how these turned out. I plan to make 6 with each as the binder and then dip them in Milk Chocolate Candy Melts and see how they turn out icon_smile.gif Wish me luckl!

OhMyGoodies, are you making a cake specifically to make cake balls? I would never have thought of that. I just assumed this was created to use up left over cake that gets level'd off of a big cake. I hope your balls turn out good. I used the Hershey's Special Chocolate bar to dip mine. I found a big bar of the special dark at Krogers for 88 cents a bar. icon_smile.gif

Good luck!

Yes Puglady (my husband LOVES pugs going to buy him one for his bday next year lol) I bake cakes just to use for cake balls especially if I have TONS to make lol. I have 6 packages to fill up with cake balls and 6 to fill with brownies so I made a 12x18" yellow cake (3 mixes) last night and broke it all up and destroyed it and it was delicious!!! Hubby said "I just don't get yall cake peoples" I said "Why not what's wrong" he said "Yall take a bake a beautiful yummy delicious cake and then destory it! just to roll it up in a mushy ball and cover it with chocolate" I laughed and said "Yeah and they are delicious! you even said so your self so stop complaining" lol he was a little upset because HE made the cake last night and to watch me put gloves on and dig into the pan and crumble it into the pan and a bowl and then fork it to death just broke his heart lol.

Last night I used Baker's DIPPING Chocolate and I do NOT recommend using this for Cake Truffles.... The chocolate only hardens if you pop them in the fridge or freezer for 10-15 minutes, mine were in the freezer for 30 minutes and the second I touched them with gloved hands the chocolate started melting again icon_cry.gif and they got stuck to the tray (I forgot to line with wax paper) so he got to take them to work (but forgot them lol) so tonight I'll make the rest of them and dip in Candy Melts and lay on a lined tray lol works better with Candy Melts and only need a few minutes to set up.

Good luck to those who try these syrups my husband LOVED them!!! I found them at Acme Markets and they were $4.99 a bottle, a little pricey but I figured it's for christmas so I want the best tasting stuff lol... He loves them!!!

OMG-That's great that your hubby helped you bake the cake. If he loves pug, he MUST BE good people. icon_lol.gificon_biggrin.gif

I'm glad you found the syrups. I bet you could use kahlua for an adult version of cake balls. I'll have to try that next time I have left over cake.
