How Do You Explain The Diff Between Buttercream & Fondan

I just got an inquiry for a wedding cake and when I asked if they were wanting the cakes covered in buttercream or fondant they said they didn't know the difference.

How do you explain in simple concise terms?

I don't want to get into a whole long explanation, but I want to avoid saying buttercream is "soft" and fondant is "hard".

Must be a better explanation, anyone have one?
