As far as a decorated cookie goes, what do you think takes a cookie to the top? I know that the skill of the decorator, the techniques used, and creativity play a big role but I am just curious what all you cookie decorators look for in a decorated cookie. I have a couple people at work that want to order cookies from me (after seeing some I have made), but I am afraid to charge them because I'm not sure that my cookies are good enough...definitely not at the level of some I have seen here on CC. So...let me know what you think makes a "good" cookie!

The first thing that popped into my mind when I saw the title of your post is that a good cookie is whichever one I just finished eating. icon_smile.gif

I compete a lot with cookies at shows, and I do cookies for other people whenever I can. It really does depend on your customer and the situation. Some people (like me) love a highly decorated, dainty cookie, and others are looking for fun, funky, chunky. I guess I'd suggest that you consider your customers, according to their personalities what they might enjoy having, and give them a price. If you need to, you can always "give a discount" but make sure they know the real price is whatever you said at first.

If your customers think they've gotten a good cookie, then they have!

I think the most important thing in baked goods is alwasy the taste. Real butter, good quality chocolate, etc.

I like looking at decorated cookies and think they're fun to do, but I don't like eating them.

hmmm, unfortunately you won't know you have overcharged until you
1)have undercharged and regret it...
or 2) they don't come back for more....

a fine line.....
just remember this:
if you make 10 dozen now and they love them.....and want 40 dozen at christmastime....you HAVE to have charged enough to put yourself and your family through the chaos.

make it worth YOUR while....call around and see what the local Hoity Toity bakery charges...

good luck!

decorated rolled thin shortbread. Real, fresh butter.
I dam and fill with a buttercream glaze. I have pics at my profile.

buttermilk
10x sugar
corn syrup
vanilla
flatten air bubbles out of cookies while still in the oven and almost done, or at least while still warm, so they hold the icing.
I use equal parts corn syr and buttermilk and play with the sugar for consistency. I have never had people NOT freak out and rave over these cookies...........

They must taste good, first and formost. After that, I want the decorations to look as if a person made them - not a machine. I want that 'made with care' look, otherwise why bother to buy it.

Thanks for your responses! Taste is always the most important thing to me...but I was just curious how others viewed the decorating. I am my own worst critic...at least my DH says I am! LOL

7yyrt...I like how you put it "made with care". I guess I just have to get past all the mistakes I see in my own decorating...a difficult task!

Thanks again!!

mawagner I just checked out your pictures and your cookies are adorable! Don't be afraid to charge for them, just looking at the pictures I can say they will definitely get their monies worth.

You can't be serious if you think your cookies aren't good enough to sell! They're beautiful. And if they taste half as good as they look, you can name your price!

Thanks for the nice comment. I just have to get past seeing all the mistakes. I have someone that wants to order the fall scarecrow bouquet in my pictures...I was thinking about 20.00-25.00. Do you guys think that is about right?
