Can someone tell me why the middle of my cake fell???? It's not even done baking, and it has fallen in the middle. I haven't been making cakes very long, and this has never happened to me before. They usually have small hump in the middle, but never a hump, then a huge indentation.

TIA
Tonya

Here are some of the reason your cake may have fell: opening the oven door, closing cabinets to hard, use of the dishwasher, or walking to hard on the floor. Sorry, this has happen to me also.

I had this happen to me when I used pudding in my cakes. I started using a cake nail. And rarely ever use pudding in the cake.

Mine has done that several times before I started to use rose nails in the middle of the pan. It seems that some time the cakes are to thick to bake evenly and so your cake will fall. Try this method next time. HTH

forgot to add that it will take longer to cook.

Thank you....I was wondering about a flower nail....then I said "Nah, it's only a 6 inch cake".....would too much batter do it too???? I put two cups like the pan instructions said, but I think it was too much. I think that I'll put 1 1/2 cups this time. I only have one 6 inch pan, so I have to do it is intervals....kinda sucks, but my DH said as soon as I decide whether I want to really do this, he'll buy me more. icon_lol.gif

I put it in a 325 oven, it was a 6 inch, my 8 inch did a little, but not nearly as much.

Even with that small type may need the nail to make it work.

Mine were doing that, too, and a pastry chef I know said that it may be that I overmixed, adding too much air into the batter, and then the air escaped and made the cake sink. Maybe that's it.

THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!!! You guys are the best. My guess is I probably over mixed. It is my favorite part of baking. I don't know why, but I love it. I may be new here, but my dh already asks me how I can spend hours upon hours on here. LOL thumbs_up.gif

I used to have this problem then discovered it was because I overmixed. I used to think....."I'll keep mixing so it'll be soooooo light and fluffy!" Well my overzealous mixing created a fluffy batter that captured tons of air, only to deflate in the oven icon_cry.gif
Now I know better icon_biggrin.gif
