I haven't ever used a flower nail for a heating core. Can someone tell me how to do it...and if it makes a dip in the cake where the platform part is positioned.

Hey there,
to use your flower nail as a heating core, grease up your pan using cake release (or cooking spray, or whatever), then grease up the flower nail with the same stuff...
you'll invert the nail (so the pointy side is up) in the middle of the pan, and pour the cake batter around it. You can re-center the nail once the batter is poured in.
The platform does make a little bit of a dent in the bottom of the cake, but it's nothing that can't be covered over with frosting.

I lightly grease the pan and fill. I coat the nail with grease and push into the middle of the batter. Make sure it touches the bottom of the pan. It will sorta suction to the bottom. It leave a small line in the shape of a ring. Sometimes it only leaves a small hole where the nail was. Hardly even noticable.

I use cake release all over the flower nail and on the sides of my pan to about an inch along the bottom. Cut parchment paper to line the bottom. Put the greased nail in the pan and put the parchent paper in bottom over the nail, pushing tip of the nail thru. The nail will do it's work but slide out very easily once the cake has cooled and leave a slight impression. Much cleaner than when I put paper in then set the nail on top of it.

I do it this way too -- poke the nail through the parchment so the flat head is under the parchment. I stopped greasing the flower nail and never have a problem. I use Magic Line pans, so I've got flower nails going in practically every cake!
