I have several recipes for it, but I want to know what it is? What frosting is it like? Is it similar to swiss meringue? Is it sticky, sweet, does it need refrigeration? Can it be used in place of buttercream? What does it taste like? How easy is it to use? The reason I'm asking is because I have a friend who is allergic to dairy and buttercream isn't an option. I was thinking of using 7-minute frosting since it only contains egg whites and sugar...but I've never used it before. I've never even tasted it.

It's yummy.....like whipped marshmellow cream. You wouldn't have to refrigerate it. It's shiny and makes beautiful peaks on a cake. It's very, very white.

It would not be used to decorate like buttercream it is a fluffy frosting used alot in the 50's and 60's especially on angelfood cake. but I would think getting it smooth would be hard usually cakes have peaks when it is used. it tastes like sugar... a bit sticky and the kids love it.

I love it and I love the way it looks on cake too. Especially at Christmas. It just reminds me of snowy peaks.

Is it the same thing as something called french boiled icing? I found a recipe for this kind of frosting on another site and really like it. I don't remember the exact meaurements but it has milk/flour/sugar boiled and then added to the fat. It wasn't too sweet, which is great.

Nope, the flour/milk/sugar is not the same thing as 7 minute. 7 minute is made with a cooked sugar syrup and whipped egg whites....IMO it is only good the day it is made, it does not keep well at all, and you cannot pipe with it. (although it does taste wonderful!!)
