Hello fellow decorators: I want to experiment with gumpaste flowers and fondant and I am wanting to try pedal dusts. Is there anywhere you can buy a 'palette' of different colors or do I need to invest in several little bottles of different color. Thank you for sharing!
When I took the Wilton gumpaste flowers course, our instructor told us about non-toxic chalk. This class was in a Michael's, and she used non-toxic chalk found in the fine art supplies in Michael's - a set of 48 square chalks in a beautiful array of colors. Just be sure to look for the non-toxic ones (even our little store sells two kinds). Use a small mesh strainer as a grater - hold the strainer as though you are pouring a liquid through it and rub the chalk across the bottom inside the strainer, allowing the chalk dust to fall onto a piece of plastic, parchment, etc. Then use it like any other petal dust. Less than $5 for a nice beginner's assortment of colors! When I took a class with Colette Peters, she had chalk sticks that she grated, too. The little vials are convenient and beautiful, but the product is either the same or close enough ...
I bought several petal dusts from sugarcraft.com and was very pleased with their service, etc. (they were $1.99/2 oz jar)
I tried grating non-toxic chalk sticks as ibmoser shared and both worked well. I have also found that you can combine the two and make just about any color you want.
I didn't find out about the chalk until after purchasing the petal dusts.![]()
I agree with the non-toxic chalks- I used them to color the callas I made for my friend's wedding cake and they worked beautifully! Make sure to buy the pastel chalks, NOT the oil pastels!!
I haven't seen a palette or sample assortment of petal dusts, though I wouldn't be surprised if it existed.

I also use chalk..I got it from a stationary store.
I always wondered.. would Eye Make Up do ? as long as it's non toxic ?
I took a class at The Wilton School a couple of years ago and my instructor said that eye makeup worked well (NON TOXIC kind).

I used colored chalks or artist pastels years ago and ground them to a powder form myself. But I never found them to go on as evenly or lightly as petal dusts. I especially like a brand of petal dusts called Crystal Colors, they have a beautiful array of colors and the jars are larger capacity than other brands. Non toxic, and Kosher certified.
