How Do I Divide Out Cake For Basket Weave

I don't worry about how many sections there are with Basketweave, I like math, but sometimes that is to much for me. I take the basketweave tip I will be using and mark around the top edge of the cake the width of the basketweave tip. So I lay it on the top and just mark the edge with a toothpick or some mark in the icing. I think take a straight spatula and mark the side of my cake from these marks.
With just going around the top I can figure out if I need to space differently based on what the end looks like, but I don't have to worry about redoing the side marks or anything.
I hope I didn't confuse you I think I just confused myself (I do so much better with pictures!)
my goodness, I just did a 5 tier basketweave last weekend and I'd still be working on it if I had to stop and measure out exactly where the weaves were going to be! ![]()
I do a lot of baskeweave cakes. I start in the back. I end in the back. If it doesn't match up exactly, then it's in the back where no one sees it. I've never premeasured .... and I never will.
Cake civilians don't really know what it's SUPPOSE to look like so whatever you do, they think it's great anyway. WE'RE the only ones that see the flaws.

Or if it is a cake that has no back perse, you use that final seam that doesn't match to drape flowers, fruit etc..whatever embellishments you're using, to hide the misfit. Save a lot of time and aggravation.
I use the cake wheel for dividing circles. On a sheet cake, honesty, I would divide it and then just make marks between if it looks to spaced apart. I don't have the patience or math skills to measure every mark. If it was my hubby, he'd have all the tools out to do so. LOL.
GL!
there is no need to make any markings on any shape of cake. just do your basket weave as wide as you want them to be, THEN when you are about 2-3 " away from the beginning count how many more verticle lines you will need. OK, bare with me here, your first verticle line you started your horizontal line at the cake board, so do the same when you stop to count, the horizontal line is at the cake board, now you need an ODD number of verticles to make it 'zip' up correctly. so you can add 3 and space them so it fits. it does work!!!
