Today I was going through my plastic container (it is one of those BIG ones you use for packing up your christmas things!) of america color and lucks and other brands of food coloring. I was thinking there has GOT to be a better way! I Have some big bottles of gels, but most of them are those little ones because I only needed Electic Pink for one item..you know how it goes. I would LOVE to have something hanging on the wall, where i can just look through them and grab the color I need. They are so small for wireshelving. I have the same problem with my petal dust, I have like 100 jars of the stuff and I have it in a friggin drawer!
So how are you storing yours?
I have a big craftsman rolling toolbox box that I have all my colors, airbrush colors, utensils and just about anything else I can put in it. I also have a big five shelf rubbermaid storage unite for my plates, boards, fake cakes and a few other things. My husband bought them for me because he wanted me to get organized...
I have a small country style cabinet (maybe 2 feet wide) with doors on both bottom and top that are see thru with my colors, dusts and sprinkles in. They are full
. I have my tips and such in a bin hung on the wall with about 50 different little drawers and all of them labeled. Different style of tps and brand and what they are used for ![]()

I currently have all my colors thrown in a basket, LOL...very organized! Seriously, how about something like a wall hanging spice rack? You'd be able to see the front of everything and maybe double stack the luster dust containers. Just an idea for ya! (maybe I should use my own idea someday)
I have all of my gel colors on a 2 tier laxy suasan I got at Bed bath and beyond. For the small ones I got a small little box (same area of the store ) it is about 6"long and 1" high. It holds most of the small ones.
My dusts are stored upside down (so i can see the color) in a shelving unit. The unit has removable drawers that have attached lids. SO I can go in the closet and say I need the dusts box and the petal cutters box and then take it to the work area. Let me know if you would like pictures to explain better.

Dusts are in a big trunk box from Michaels, separated into smaller boxes to keep certain colors together. The colors are in a shoe-box size plastic box from Michaels with a handle on top and clamps on the side so I can transport. Hope that helps! ![]()
I converted our guest room into my office. I bought the NSF metal racks from Lowes. They are the same that we have at work for dry storage and pots and pans. I have lined 2 walls with them. I bought baskets and small 3 drawer containers from Wal-mart and have completely organized my cake things.
My colors are in one compartment, dusts in 2 others. I have baskets separated for fondant work, gumpaste work, icing tips, etc. I love my office. Now if only I could run a home based biz here in MO without having to put in another kitchen! But, when I get my location, I will be set.
Also, now no one can stay with us long since I converted the guest room, they don't like sleeping on the couch ![]()
I have plastic Rubbermaid 3 drawer towers where I keep all of my colors, dusts, and tips. It's not exactly the one I show below but it is similar.
I keep the gels and dusts organized by color (all red in one, all blue in another, etc). This way I can pull out the whole drawer to search for the color I need. For tips, I put organize the tips by style (round, star, etc) in small plastic containers and put the containers in the drawers.
If you want something that can hang up, maybe one of those clear plastic shoe organizers that you can hang over the door would work? Of course, you'd have to have a door from which to hang it!
I found a tackle box at Sportsmans warehouse that works great. It is double sided with two deep compartmnets and 2 shallow ones. It cam with plastic dividers so you can configure the layout as you wish. It works great for the small tubes of americolor and the wilton colors and the dusts. I only have two large bottles of americolor (red and black) and they are in the deep compartment. I use the 2 shallow sides for all my icing tips!!
I hopes this helps, I don't have a lot of space for storage or a room so this was the solution that suited me. Good luck!!
Here is a link to the one I have. There are many more that may suit you better!! http://www.huntingfishinginc.com/pl39spta.html
wow, such great suggestions!! I love them all! I did one of those plastic wire type thingies you hang in your cubbard for canned goods for my big lucks food colorings..but I love the idea of the plastic drawer thing for dusts! I bet you can drill holes in the back to hang on the wall? (I have no more floor space left!
My craftsman toolbox is already full of cutters, gum paste tools, rolling pins, and stuff like that (I do a LOT of gum paste work)
When I saw on TV Duffs shop and his storage of tips, I immediately ran out and got one of those screw plastic thingies for all my tips! and have filled two of them!
You know with all the stuff we collect already, why do we always need more?
I have some basic stuff in a craftsman toolbox but then in my pantry I have a kids toy shelf I got for $40 at target it's reg. $60. It has 12 bins that are kinda slanted. Some are bigger than others and I just divided my supplies up like, Stuff for making a cake ie. bake even strips, cake release, icing ingredients. etc. then a cookie cutter one, a fondant one, a royal icing flowers one, a cupcake one, etc. I really like this idea because depending on what I need I can just grab the bucket and go to the kitchen to use it. Here is a link of what I'm talking about I got the natural colors they also have primary and pastels too. HTH
