I have an order for a snowman wedding cake (no joke, I tried to talk them out of it!), and I am wondering if anyone has any ideas for making the large "ball" on the bottom tier. I didn't know if I could bake in a large aluminum bowl or something similar or if I should just make multiple layers and carve it. I have a couple of months but I want my plans in place because I have 2 wedding cakes the week after christmas.
The whole cake has to feed 100, so the bottom layer doesn't have to be huge but sizeable.
You could do something like this...but they aren't made with balls
I just love this ![]()
Have a great night!

I think a snowman wedding cake sounds kinda cute! For ball cakes, I'd suggest locating a set of the old fashioned, 60s style, brightly colored Pyrex mixing bowls (they're ovenproof and I'm sure all over e-bay). They make perfect halves for circles, so you'd just have to make two and glue them together with buttercream. I have a set of 4 and I'm sure they'd make a perfect snowman with different sized bowls for the snowballs. I may have to try it myself! I made the fish cake on my Avatar with the medium sized bowl. Good luck!
I also think the bundt pans would be a great idea. It's easy to make the pumpkin cake by adding two on top of each. Just round the edges.
Thanks Christi! I had a blast making it. It was for my daughter's 4th birthday. The bowls make nearly perfect half rounds (my MIL recently gave me the whole set after I'd borrowed them so many times to bake cakes!). I actually used the same one to make a teapot cake for my other daughter's birthday. The bundt pan is a great suggestion too! I'm thinking of making a pumpkin cake with one!
Never thought of a bundt pan, lovely idea. How big do thos puppies come I wonder....
Cristina, love the fish too. I made a cake a while back with 2 fish like yours on top, made the fins and lips out of candy melts and brought it to the party in the trunk, bet you can guess where this is going.....live and learn I suppose.
