Frosting Information Needed & Question--Please!

1. Why are wilton recipes for BC frosting different (i.e. magazine, website, old books)? I just think it seems kind of odd. I don't have much experience and am trying to gather a couple of "ultimate" tried and true recipes that I can use for cakes or cupcakes. They all seem slightly different.
2. What kind of frosting should I use to decorate cupcakes? I want a frosting that will hold up if I want to pipe out swirls on top. Last cream cheese frosting I used, it was too soft and there was no swirls.
I gathered a couple of crusting BC frosting recipes on the net, can I use one of these??
