I was just put in charge of the christmas cake for my family gathering and I am really nervous. I am new to this and not sure where to begin. To complicate things my sister's birthday is on Christmas so I have to do 2 cakes , once X-mas and one B-day. She always said she hated her b-day cakes to have christmas stuff on them so I feel bad to do that. Any ideas for these 2 cakes for a really nervous beginner? I have only done fondant once but really liked it. Any ideas GREATLY appreciated.

I think you should do another ornament cake for Christmas..that was awesome!!
For the bday...perhaps something wintery like a snowman scene...or penguins...

Cheers,

You could make a sheet cake that looked like a Christmas package for the family, including a bow. This could be made with a combination of buttercream and fondant.

For your sister, make a cake based on a hobby or personal interest that she has. Have the colors coordinate with the Christmas cake, but make it appear to be specifically for her.

I just had another thought about the bday cake...a high heeled shoe cake...you should check this out...Boonenati has a great tutorial website and there is a wonderful high heeled shoe tutorial..the pattern for it is right here on CC..I made one for my future DIL and she went nuts for it. It was pretty easy.you make it from gumpaste.
It would be a different sort of cake she would likely never expect and I bet she would love it.

I understand where you are coming from. My cousin, who is like my sister is a christmas ever baby. So this year I have decided that I am going to make her a purse cake so that way she doesnt have to have the "christmas cake with a b-day candle".
As for the christmas cake... How about a winter wonderland theme? You could have a blue cake with snowmen, snowflakes, penguins etc.

Thanks for your ideas everyone. I am so stressed because my mom is really critical and I don't want to give her a chance to have a negative thing to say icon_mad.gif

jacqrose- I was thinking of doing a purse cake for my sister too! I have never done one so I am a little hesitant to try for the 1st with all these people seeing it icon_redface.gif Do you know how to make them? Any tips? I was also thinking of a square light blue cake with royal snowflakes for the X-mas cake. We must be on the same wavelength icon_biggrin.gif
