When I decorate, I use Wilton's Ready Made Decorator's Icing. It's white and ready to be colored. But ever time I try to make red, it comes out like a pinkish, or orangy red. I want it RED. Anyone have any tips on how to get it RED? Do I add another color to make it red? If so, what color? TIA ladies!!!

Let it sit over night and it should be red in the morning! You also need to use ALOT of the red coloring to get red! I did mine last week it was ike pinkins but dark pinkish and in the morning it was red!

Red takes a lot of gel paste to deepen to a jewel tone.

The Wilton no-taste red is good because it doesn't add a yucky taste.

I've never tried it, but its been recommended to add red unflavored Kool-Aid to deepen the color.

Here are some other ideas:

Ameri-color has a Super Red paste that is supposed to be good. I often get my icing as red as I can get it than use the Wilton red spray on it if it's not a border. I agree with the other post that making your icing a head of time, using LOTS of red and than waiting a day or two does help.

I just made red icing this weekend and I mixed Wilton no-taste red with Christmas red. I let it sit overnight and it came out beautful - I think. I did use almost both jars of color though icon_rolleyes.gif

Good Luck!

Yes, Koolaid does work and it adds a nice cherry flavor to the icing. It also helps to stard with a color other than white. Try adding a little cocoa or coffee to your icing first, then color. All bold colors do take a little while to reach their potential..

Wow, I came to post this same question about red coloring and find one already going! Yay!
I was going to ask about the nice colors you can get through CakeCentral. Are they better then Wilton's?
I had a real problem coloring 3 cups of white buttercream this weekend. After more then half a (brand new) jar of Christmas Red, some burgandy and some black it was dark enough. The bigger problen was by that time I got that color the icing tasted awful! Completely bitter. icon_mad.gificon_cry.gif
Next time I'll experiment with the jello idea but in this case cherry icing woundn't go over real big with banana cupcakes! icon_wink.gif
Someone please tell me I can order red color from CC and it will work better!!

I always use a little brown to make it darker and use lots of red
