Yesterday was a terrible day. Right up there with the day I lost my mom. icon_cry.gif We had to put down our beloved pet of 15 years. icon_cry.gificon_cry.gif OMG that was, is the most painful thing EVER. icon_cry.gificon_cry.gif

That aside, my vet was WONDERFUL, the staff WONDERFUL. I wont go into details but they were very respectful and sincere over everything. I would love to show my gratitude to them. Would making a cake in the shape of a bone to say THANKS be tacky?? I really want to do something because they went above and beyond the past few weeks for us and (if it's possible) put my mind at ease that we made the right decision for our pet.

Thoughts? Opinions?

Thanks!

I think your vet and his/her staff would really appreciate any gesture you make for them .. and I am sorry for your loss ..

I'm sorry for your loss. I would make a cake with white cloud effects. Make a dogs head & two wings to ressemble an angel & place on clouds. It's just an idea (my DH's)

My heart goes out to you - I can't even fathom losing my puppy girl. I think that a cake or cookies would be a very nice jesture if they were so good to you. It is a painful loss and if they were able to give you support and provide needed services, then definetly show your gratitude to them - they problem don't get it very much. People do things like that for nursing home and hospital staff and priests...

I work in an animal hospital and I would say that would definitely be appreciated!!!

I have never worked in an animal hospital where everyone didn't attack food the moment it came through the door--especially anything homemade!

Its always nice to be appreciated . . .

So sorry for you with the loss of your pet. It is never an easy decision but in my opinion, it is the ultimate decision to make from the bottom of your heart. I am sure you loved your pet and gave them an incredible, loving home for 15 years.

I like this idea, no I don't think is tacky. I am very sorry for your loss. I have had my cat for 3 years and love him dearly. I can imagine how your pain is unbearable for you right now. I do think is a very nice gesture to do that for the vet & staff, but may be something like seaqueen is suggesting, more of a meaningful cake. May be an edible image of your pet and behing some clouds. God bless your pet's soul. Post your cake ok. An remember there will be no other pet liek him/her.

Yes, I too am sorry for your loss. Pets are the next best thing to kids. I would say it might do your aching heart some good to make a cake for your vet.

I am so sorry for your loss. We lost our cat of 14 years last November, so I know the pain you are going through. I will tell you, time does heal, as it has healed our hearts. Just knowing they are out of their pain....playing joyfully in heaven as they did when they were puppies (kittens). That is what gives me the most comfort. Just know my thoughts and prayers are with you during this most difficult time.

A cake in the shape of a bone is a wonderful idea. I believe it will help give you closure and show your gratitude, all at the same time.

I worked in a clinic for 5 yrs as a tech and I now sell the drugs to the vet. Being in the industry for a total of 11 yrs I will tell you, WE LOVE FOOD!! It's always nice to get a thank you and be appreciated. You could make a kitty litter cake with poos that spell thanks and they would probably think it was the greatest. The grosser the better, and the nicer the gesture the better. Good for you for being a thoughtful person. I am so sorry for your loss, I truly know what you're going through and wish you lots of comfort.

Just a suggestion, but I would disagree with this idea. If we received a cake like this in our office, we would not be able to eat it. Try to keep in mind that although you were the one saying goodbye to a family member, we have to be the ones to actually give the injection. Something pet related but NOT specifically depicting your deceased pet would be best.

Perfect advice! When you work in an emotional environment, such as animal hospitals, you tend to have a gross, warped sense of humor. Cakes like this are a riot and a surefire hit! A cake shaped like a dog house, the dog bone idea, paw print cookies, etc are all appropriate. No matter what you choose to do, something home-baked from your heart will be sure to touch them!

I can tell you I had a very similar situation. I had to have my beloved 7 yr. olf golfen retriever put down due to a diagnosis of cancer after a few month illness. It was so painful for all involved...including the ver and the staff of the hospital. I also wanted to do something for them, so I made them a cute cookie boquet with bears dressed in scrub suits. They told me how much they appreciated me doing something for them in my time of loss...so I think it woudl be appreciated if you did make them something.
I am SO very sorry for your loss of your darling. My thoughts are with you. I wish I could say time heals, but it's been 10 months for me, and I still am having a terrible time letting go! Be strong, and warm wishes.

Your post makes my heart ache for your pain. I am so sorry you are going through this. As someone who lost their beloved dog of 18 years and then lost their second dog (also 1icon_cool.gif the very next year, I understand what you are going through. I still feel the warmth of my little dog as I held her near and she sighed her last breath. I like to think of that moment as a breath from God giving her new life where she can see, run, and chase anything she wants. I still miss them both, and visit their graves. Yes, I found an old rock and had it engraved.

I think the cake is an excellent idea. The design should be something that brings comfort to you. If you have any leftover supplies, you might want to remember the dogs your vet cares for free (if they do that) and help them with their costs by donating those to them also. Or the animal shelter is always a good place.

I hope you find comfort from all the love here on CC and all the wonderful cakers who feel your pain and say a silent prayer for you.

Thanks for all the love and support!!

I think I will make the dog bone cake for them. I need to find out when that particular Vet will be there. I know Monday's generally she is so maybe I'll take a chance she'll be there. I will have sunday to do it. It's really going to be the only day I can this week, tuesday.......too rushed.

Thanks again for all the ideas and support. Today I stayed busy with getting stuff together for a yard sale that we are having tomorrow. I still expect to see him walk up behind me or around the corner. I know he is here in spirit, I feel him.

Ok, still too much to do to sit and cry. It's late but all are in bed and I am on a roll!!

HUGS to my CC friends.

I'm so sorry you lost your beloved pet. I have a 15 yr/o cat that drives me insane...but I know I will be lost without her one day. I think a cake shaped like a dog bone would be cute & not make the office staff feel sad. They have dog bone cookie cutters, you could use one as a template to decorate the top of a bigger dog bone with icing or sprinkles or ... ??? Or you could make your own template out of cardboard.

Sometimes a really great cry is what we need.

I hope your cake making is healing for you.

I too am so very sorry. It took no time at all for the tears to come. We have 2 kittens, Will and Grace. They are about 4 months old and already none of us want ever to part with them. When my childhood cat died the vet took so very good care of my mom. There was a proper buriel and such a nice letter from him. Baking them a cake is a wonderful idea. I am sure they will much appreciate it.

Aww... sorry about the loss of your pooch,
last yr, I lost my 17 yr old cat.
I think it would be a lovely thing to do for the vet!
I don't think it would be tacky at all
It may even help with the loss,
take care

OMG, I am so sorry for your loss. We had to put my beloved 13 year old cat down THE SAME DAY. You and I were having the worst day ever. And I know what you mean about having so much to do and no time to cry.

I think the cake is such a wonderfully generous idea. They do have a rough job. Unlike doctors for humans, vets know that pretty much every one of their patients is going to die during the course of their career.

My thoughts are with you.

I was wondering this too. We had to put down a kitty a few weeks ago and it was sooo hard even though I knew he was hurting. The vet and assistants were awesome and they let us stay for as long as we needed. They sent a nice card a few days later. They were great! It was the hardest thing to walk back in there two weeks later for a doggy check-up after taking kitty.

I wasn't sure whether to do cookies or a cake, and even wondered if it would be weird to do something like that. I'm sure they will love it!

I'm so sorry for the loss of your beloved pet...
I know your grief as so many do.. I had to put my dog of 16 yrs down 2 yrs ago because of cancer.. I went to work and they sent me home, I couldn't stop crying for 3 days.

I'm not sure if any of you have seen this before, but it made me feel better after reading it.. (THOUGH BEWARE, you will cry when you read it)

DianeLM ((((HUGS))) for you and me! It totally SUCKS!! icon_cry.gif

I did a no no yesterday. I went to the pet store for fish stuff and thought, well let me just look around. They don't have pets for sale but they do have a "Hotel" for pets and they had "free time" and there was a Cool Whip dog in there icon_cry.gificon_cry.gif I lost it. I couldn't move. I was just standing there with tears running down my face. He looked JUST like him in the face. Usually the onese that we have seen have a thicker nose but his was thin just like Cool Whips. ::::sniff::::

Idowedding... OMG we saw that on the wall in the Vet's office. I am so glad you sent that, it's something my husband read when we were waiting. It's a great thing to think of huh?? THanks!
