Is it okay to buy a wood circle from the Home Depot and cover it in cloth or something to use as a 'plateau'?

What kind of problems would arise?

AND

If it's going to be a 14" round cake with a 10" and 6" stacked on it, what size would you get?

I just did the same thing . . . I covered the board in contact paper and placed a ribbon trim around the edge.

I would at least get one that was 18 inches. That way you have room for your border, and to carry the thing.
