I was in the hardware store yesterday and I can across the ceramic tiles (the big ones for floors), they had such a range of colours and textures and I suddenly though what a fabulous cake board it would make. I purchased a deep red (great for a Christmas cake!). Cake board in NZ are really expensive and the tiles were between $1 - $2.50.

As they are ceramic you can wash them and also reuse them, just wanted your opinion on if the was okay to do (food safe??)

Cheers
Kathryn

Wow, what a creative idea! I, personally, would try it. benches in my kitchen are tile, and I like it because I can cut and prepare food on them after cleaning them really good. And, like you said, they clean up easily too. I say try it, and let me know how it turns out. BTW, I am soooooo jealous that you are in Auckland and I am not. I loved it there and didn't want to leave. Felt like home the moment I got there.
Good luck!

I use them all the time, they are also inexpensive enough that if you lose them you don't have to cry. I also attach little ceramic knobs at the bottom to give the tiles feet! the whole thing comes to about 5 bucks and it give your pastries, candies and cakes a wow factor. I'm currently trying to decide if I want to build cupcake stands with them..lol

So, now we all are going to strip our local Home Depot, tile shops..lol

I'm telling you...go to the hardwares stores with fresh eyes and you can see all kinds of cake decorating tools!

a lot of cake decorating tools have been adapted from hardware tools

Plaster texturing tools, scrapers and such..

I even have a portable dremel tool that I use for Pastillage!!!

Someone will have to post a pic of a cake on the tiles. Sounds a great idea. Boards here are expensive too I would never have thought of that.

Here is the tile I purchased yesterday cost me $1.20nz

I have a 6 inch little Christmas cake that I want to make for my nana, so I think Ill ice it in white, green ribbon around the bottom and some fondant holly on top a quick, easy effective Christmas cake!

They had plain colours, and some really cool textured stone which I though would be good too.
