Okay how do i move my iced cake from my work surface to my display plate/board/whatever without ruining it?

Or, is there a way to work ON the display piece???

I decorate the cake on the thing it will be presented on. I put strips of wax paper under it so the plate/board is clean when I am done. After the sides are iced I then pull the strips out and do the border around. I don't know how to move a decorated cake once it is done without doing some kind of damage.

I agree with birdgirl. You have to work on the display board. Pampered chef sells this item that is used for picking up pizza, its two semi circle things that you could use to lift your cake, but I wouldn't recommend it for anything larger than an 8" cake. Still, it could ruin it. The wax paper strips are the way to go.

this is a problem for me also--

what if you are doing a stacked cake though--can't work on your final surface right?

I end up fixing the "mess" with my border added on once in place.

I usually use a non-skid strip under my cake board when i'm working on in--then lift it off my lazy susan by pulling on ithe strip and use a thin spatula when placing it on the next tier.

It works, but I'd love a better way--

I do tiers that will be seperate on cake boards with parchment under them and lift them with a very wide flat metal spatula, but I do not make the borders until it is placed so I can hide any little scrapes.

Shouldn't you stack al your cakes before decorating?
