Ok! i am new at the fondant ....I'm wanting to make a baby shower cake in a few weeks and I am afraid that it would take to long to order the fondant....Is there a homemade fondant that is simple but great tasting that a newby would not have a hard time with????

P.S. how many time would I need to practice making it before I need to make my cake....i'm a little scared that I won't have the time and the cake will look bad.

personally i like making my own marshmellow fondant. it tastes great and is easy to work with (along with easy to make) there is a tutorial on here in the articles section on how to make it. don't be afraid if you don't have a KA i've done it w/o one too. if you need any help just let me know.

Hi missvan,

I love Fondant.. I make my own Marshmallow Fondant.. It will take a lot of practice b4 you will be comfortable with it...Marshmallow taste much better..

But for practice, use the Wilton one, just to get the feel of it.

When is your cake due ?
Here is a cake I did last month, a babyshower cake:

I for one have never actually used the KA to make MMF so you can definitely do it! I use the one in the recipes section called "Rhonda's Marshmallow Fondant" but any of the recipes will work great. So simple: marshmallows, water and powdered sugar. And crisco to grease everything with!

You're "done" when it is no longer sticky to touch, that's when to stop adding powdered sugar. I think the first time I made it, I didn't understand that, so it was quite hard to work with cuz it was too sticky.

I prefer Toba Garrett's fondant to MMF.. MMF is a bit too chewy for me and Toba's is much less chewy. It's still really sweet though. It's the recipe section here and just as easy to make as MMF. icon_biggrin.gif

The marshmallow fondant is good.
I like Michele Foster's recipe over Toba's simply because it works for me every time! When I needed Toba's to work, I had problems with it ripping and it was 4 am and the cake was due by noon. I was not happy! Ive made Michele's now about 7 times and have never had that problem.

I made Toba Garret's fondant and used it on the baby shower cake in my photos. It tasted great and worked well. I haven't tried to make MMF yet. I am waiting to get my new KA, it will be here Monday! I have a Sunbeam Heritage now and I don't think it could handle the job.

I also have used both Satin Ice and Wilton's. Satin Ice works very well and so does Wilton but Satin Ice tastes much better. Have fun making the cake, I had a blast making the baby shower cake for my friend! Good luck! icon_smile.gif

If you haven't already watch this tutorial it gives you a pretty good general idea of the proper way to cover your cake with fondant:

Weirkd,
What kind of milk do you use with this recipe?
Thanks!

I love the taste of Michelle's fondant but it always gets little cracks around the top edge. I have rollrd thinner and tried rolling it thicker. I have covered the cake while elevated so the fondant hangs down and I have covered a cake with it while it sat on the counter so the fondant wasn't hanging. Every time I get those stinking cracks! Any advice would be great! I love her fondant's taste, I prefer it over the MMF.

I have had really great experiences with MMF....I love the feel and texture of it while working with it. In my own experiences you just have to really work it. I wrap it while it is a little bit sticky but then when cool I knead it for at least five minutes till when folded over it doesnt crack. I am really pleased with it right now because there isn't any humidity.
I haven't experienced Toba's recipe or Rhondas but I am sure they are both good. Here is the last cake I did with the MMF icon_smile.gif
