Need advice from those of you who know what you're doing (certainly not me!). I have a request for a birthday cake incorporating a buisness logo which is a city skyline. My idea is to frost with buttercream (as requested by the client...they didn't particularly want fondant), and then cut out of fondant a long flat "skyline" and wrap that around the cake's sides, rather like you'd wrap pretty ribbon around the bottom of a wedding cake, only this will be a fondant "city" then decorate the top with fireworks and words and whatever else I can think of. Is this a stupid idea? Will the fondant stick around the side (sitting right on the cake board at the bottom of the side...am I making sense here?) and will this partial-fondant side look stupid or bleed color or anything? I don't want to just freehand draw the city on the sides because I'm not good enough to make it look right, but I thought this might give some texture if I can make it work. Thoughts? Thanks all!

I don't think it's a stupid idea, but it really sucks that they don't want a fondant-covered cake- it'd make it so much easier!

Not a dumb idea at all=) I did hear that to make fondant "stick" to the cake side, just wet the back of the fondant piece with a little water and it should hold. I think it is a really cool idea of putting the skyline around the side of the cake, nice idea!

I think you're brilliant!!!! lol icon_lol.gif Sounds like a great idea to me. I have not done fondant, but if it won't stick to the BC with water, what about a small outline of BC on the back and maybe some in the center of the fondant piece to hold it on. BC should stick to BC. Be sure to post pics.

Sounds like a great idea. My only concern would be the top of the skyline drooping over. Fondant doesn't hold it's shape unless it's left to dry. (at least that's my experience. )

In the Whimiscal Bakehouse book there is a great skyline made from choc transfer using candy melts. The library may have the book.

Can't wait to see the pics.

Good luck.

I was thinking FBCT but chocolate transfer is a good idea also.

I think that this is a great idea. just make sure to let the fondant dry before you apply to the BC.

Also, in my experience, you may not need to wet the fondant to get it to stick to the BC, otherwise, you may end up with water seeping out from behind it.

I don't think it is a dum idea at all. Here is one done by Duff Goldman of Charm City Cakes. His is all fondant, but could be incorporated to buttercream with fondant skyline.
