Hello all, here I am again, asking questions! I have a few about cake boards.

1. I have purchased sheet cake boxes with the clear windows on top that come with a cake board, they seem very flimsy once the cake is on and decorated, had many scary moments and even some cracking in transit. question: What do you all use?

2. Covering the boards, what do you all use to cover these boards? I see so many pretty ones but I am unsure where to get nice covering.

thank you AGAIN!

Usually I have to double or triple the boards for them to be sturdy enough.

I have covered them in foil, foil paper, and wrapping paper before.

For those cake boxes that you are describing, I just use the board that comes with it as the bottom of the box. I always use separate boards for my cakes. Usually really thick ones for sheet cakes.

and as for wrapping them, I use freezer paper. Personally, I think wrapping paper and stuff is too busy. Freezer paper is white.

When ever I make a sheet cake (all I normally make lol) I buy the Wilton cake boards, I take either double sided tape or duck tape and tape the boards together and depending on which size cake it is 1/4 sheet gets two boards, 1/2 gets three, and full gets 4, I tape them all together and then cover then with regular foil and then sometimes depending on what the occasion is I'll wrap it in wrapping paper. Hope this helps icon_smile.gif

I have a cake supply place that carries single and double cord cakeboards so for the larger cakes I buy two double instead of four singles and tape them together. I use all kinds of things to wrap (foil, wrapping paper) depending on the theme of the cake.

Thank you so much! I sure do appreciate the help. I think I will have to start stacking the boards like you all mentioned. Happy Holidays!

For the most recent sheetcakes that I made, I used one of the wilton boards taped to 3/8 in foamcore board. To cover my boards, I use fanci foil, tissue paper or wrapping paper to coordinate with the theme of the cake. The dollar store is a great place to pick up inexpensive paper. Then I cover the entire board with clear contact paper.

foam board from hobby lobby or michaels works great as well. Very sturdy.

For really cheap cardboard, go to a place that sells all kinds of boxes. They usually have sheet cardboard at really good prices. A circle cutter from the craft store can save you a fortune. I usually double board for small cakes, and then triple or more for large cakes. I also make a smaller version of the same shape to attach underneath as a finger lift.

These places usually have all kinds of unmarked boxes at very good prices. I take a flap type box, cut it 1/2 horizontally, and then I have two very strong boxes. To cover them, I just use the wide plastic wrap and tape it down. It makes for a nice window, I can put my label on the side and it is very secure. I also make my own boxes, but that's a whole other thing. icon_rolleyes.gif

I use shelving paper to cover my boards. The variety is wonderful, it is pre-glued, and is very easy to use. For the rounds, cut 1/2 wide slits up to the board, pull the pieces over the edge snugly, then hot glue some ribbon to the sides to hide the splits.

I use shelving paper also. I haven't used florist foil in years. Sometimes I use the white for boards that I want to use for transferring cakes or working with fondant, etc. They can then be cleaned off and used again!

Very cheap, very easy. Just the way I like it! icon_biggrin.gif

I use foam borad mostly but my dh just made me three masonite boards. Each of them are 13x18 (I mostly use the box that is 14x19), he paid $3 for the sheet and Home Depot cut them for him. I put a foam board on top of it so that it would not get scratched up and covered them both in freezer paper.
