I had a request to dedicate a cake I'm planning for a party to one of the men who might be there.

Since a dedication doesn't really go along with the cake idea I had in mind (a square cake with binoculars on it and perhaps, a bird sitting on the binocs ... it's for a birding party), I was thinking of creating a "sign" from fondant and then writing on it with something. Then propping it up against the binoculars.

Do you think fondant is a good mediium for this idea? If so, what might I write on it with?

Thanks for any advice.

I love this forum. Everyone is so generous in sharing their knowledge!

You could use fondant but gumpaste would be more stable. If you have Tylose powder try adding some to your fondant to make it dry harder. Make a ball of fondant about the size of a tangerine and knead in about 1/2 teaspoon of Tylose powder. I have also heard of doing the same with Gumtex or even powdered denture adhesive, I haven't tried either myself, but anything in a pinch.

Cheryl, there are edible markers you can buy to write on fondant/gumpaste. i think Wilton makes some... the name escapes me at the moment. Is it Fooddoodlers or something like that?

I've never tried gum paste, but I think I'll go and buy some just to try it out.

And the marker too!

Thanks so much for your helpful comments.
