I just got a 6 week old english bulldog. He is so cute and wonderful my only problem is I want to start potty training him to go outside. We have a crate for him to go into and I have read many different things but dont know what to do. He doesnt do bad he for the most part goes outside except for at night and a little mistake here or there. But I was told to leave him in the crate alot so he can learn that, that is his home and then when we can pay attention and watch him like a hawk let him out and play and then put him out as much as you can. He only went potty on the floor one time but that was because I couldnt watch him for a second. So what have yall done to potty train yalls dogs and what can I do to help this along. I am about to be out of school tom. So I will be able to watch him more because I wont have school to do. And by the way I passed all of my classes and this last class I am kind of sceptical about very hard class and didnt do to good on test so cross your fingers on my reseach paper.
It sounds like you're doing everything right. It also sounds like whomever you got him from didn't - puppies should not leave their mothers before 8 weeks of age. That's not your doing, but be aware that he can have issues as a result of that. A dog in one of my obedience classes was taken from his mother at 6 weeks and he was a neurotic fella, the trainer believed it was due to that. Definitely take him to obedience class when he's older because he may not have learned proper behavior from his mother & siblings.
Definitely crate him when you can't watch him, even if it's just for 2 minutes while you go to the bathroom. This will not only not allow him to go potty where he shouldn't, but he won't be able to eat anything he shouldn't. Also know that at that age they can not hold it. They are like 2 year olds who are just learning to use the potty. When they have to go, they have to go NOW. He will come to love his crate and will go in there voluntarily to nap & hang out. When you are leaving for a while, make sure you leave him something to chew on like a big nylabone or other hard object. Also make this thing something that you only give him when he's crated, so he looks forward to it. But when he has to go potty, he will circle or pace and sniff. You'll soon pick up when he's doing "that sniff" or when he's just sniffing. When he's starting to sniff, clap your hands and/or call his name and say "outside!" in your happy voice. Take him out and watch him until he goes. After he goes, praise a lot and bring him right back inside. Right now you want him to learn that outside is for potty. When he gets that, he can be outside to play also. He will have to pee very soon after playing, so if you're playing for a bit, take him out to try. He will also have to go very soon after a nap and obviously first thing in the morning.
Good luck!

Our dog, a Border Collie, learned to potty on command. You are doing everything right, but here are a few pointers.
Take him out immediately when you let him out of the crate. Right now you might have to carry him, but in a couple of weeks, let him walk so he knows where he is supposed to go. He will eventually go to that door as a signal to you that he has to go outside to potty.
Take him to a potty spot. At our house, it is right outside our garage service door - in the side yard. Our dog knows that is where he is to go potty. When you take him out, say "Go Potty", and praise like crazy when he is done.
Your dog will eventually get the hang of it. Crate training is great. Our dog goes into his crate on his own - I used to say "Kennel" and reach into the treat box for a treat, but now he hears me digging in the treat box, and automatically heads for his kennel. He gets there before I do. He waits for me to give him the treat and close the door.
Also, when you say "Go Potty" everytime he needs to go, he will learn the command. So when you take him somewhere with you, and you need for him to "go" before he gets into the car, just take him over to the grass and say "Go Potty", and he will go immediately, on command.
Obedience training is great. Start him as young as possible. The sooner they learn basic obedience, the better you will get along. Obedience training is all about teaching you how to teach your dog. And it is a lot of fun! Good luck!
Thanks. I love him already and he kind of whines when he first goes into the crate and but after he realizes that he cant come right back out he quites down and plays with some of the toys he has in there. He has a stuff animal that smells like his mom and family so that way he can kind of feel at home. He sleeps on it, its so cute. We are thanking about getting a female english bulldog as well to maybe breed later on because my husband wants one as well and we would like to teach them both at the same time. But I am so excited and the price of these puppys are well worth it.
It sounds like you're doing things the right way. Really, at 6 wks old, they're too young to "get it", but it doesn't hurt to start that young.
Our dog has stayed in a kennel (crate ) and I've trained her to where I say kennel and she just goes. The same way with potty training....only take them out when you know you can watch them.
It wouldn't hurt to take them out after they eat and after a nap, so they kinda get into that routine, b/c that's usually when they have to go.
You might want to refer to going outside with a term. Our dog went to the door when she had to go, so we'd say potty every time. Now, if we're in the other room, she'll come to us looking like she wants to say something. We'll say potty and she runs to the door.
When it's out of the crate, definitely get their attention if they're starting to sniff the floor and/or squat, do what you can to stop them. I clapped my hands for our dog, but sometimes a firm NO will do.
One last thing, invest in a very good pet cleaner for your carpet. We have one made by odor eaters and it's great. You can't smell anything......b/c you don't want them smelling that and going there again.
Just get down your own routine with her and she'll do just fine.
Good Lcuk, HtH!!
Thanks everyone,
I had a pekingese and he was 6 weeks when I got him he learned right away to go on his pee pad but this dog is going to be a little to big to go on a pad so we have decided to do the outside thing. I havent even given him the chance to go potty on the floor. I have try my hardest to either be on him or have him in the crate. Some people think that is bad but as I have read here and other places thats the best thing to do. I dont mind it one bit that way im not cleaning up the floor everytime I turn around. If he goes in the crate I can take it outside and clean it right up. I also try to take his food away by 7 and they say dont let bulldogs be free eaters because they will just eat and eat and then not be able to hold themselves.
finnox! my fiance and i are getting a female brindle english bulldog on the 22nd!! we are so excited!
we live in Cleveland, Texas right near you! maybe we could breed them one day, we've been thinking about it! where did you get your puppy from?
Where do you go to school? is it culinary school?
I just finished school this week too! im stress free until January! and i have time to play with my new puppy!
Aww I got him from a personal breeder in Tomball where are you getting yours?? No as of right now I am going to school for business law but as soon as I am finished with that I am going into culinary school for pastry. Me and my husband are planning on opening up 2 business one for him and one for me and so I am trying to get that under my belt before going into culinary school so I can open up a bakery. My male is reverse brindle which if you dont know what that means the darker color is the stripes and he has white it is very evenly colored. I love him so much already and he is so a great dog. That would be a great idea to maybe bread them one day and since they will be the same age he will be ready when she is. You probably live at most 35 minutes away from me I would think. I live right off of 242 in Conroe/The Woodlands.
We are getting her from this breeder in Sulpher Springs, up near dallas. Their website is http://www.dbestbullies.com/index.html
I know exactly where 242 is! not too far.. Im going to school downtown at Houston Community College..its great! I love it!
I am going to try to send some photos..hope it works!

There are some pictures of her, her dad, her mom, and other dogs!

Aww I will have to show you pictures of mine as well I just dont have any yet. How old is she?? Mine is only 6 weeks and a day very young and since I had him since he was 5 weeks and 5 days she sold him a little soon. But he is great and we are planning on putting him in school just as soon as he is a little older so he can actually know what is going on.
Yes please post or PM or email me a pic or two! She was born Nov. 12, so she will be almost exactly 6 weeks when we pick her up. We cant wait to get her! What day was yours born on?
When we went to the breeders house last week, her dad Rufus, the white one..came running out of the house and rolled straight onto his back for belly rubs! They were all so loving and affectionate..I was kind of nervous at first because they look so intimidating, but they are so sweet!
I hope potty training goes well for you! and I enjoyed reading your post and what others input, so I can be prepared..we should keep in touch about our puppies and their issues!

I was wondering I just noticed that he has what looks like acne is that normal in this type of dog or could it be something major?
Where is the acne type stuff located?
Ok I don't know anything about that. We had a pup with it all over the belly. It died so I wanted to make sure this isn't what yours had. If you have a vet for him, ask your vet about it.
