I have a problem with keeping the icing from being pulled of the tiers that have another tier stacked on top of them. Recently I did a four-tier cake. I stacked the bottom two tiers the night before transporting and then assembled the top two tiers after I got there. I let the icing crust completely on all the tiers and then sprinkled all tiers with quite a bit of PS before stacking to prevent the icing from pulling off. I used lots of dowels, maybe even more than was really needed. The top tier came off great, but for some reason, the icing on the bottom two tiers still came off when the upper tiers were removed. What else can I do to prevent this from happening? I thought maybe I should cut the dowels just a smidgeon above the icing so the tiers wouldn't weigh down on the icing as much. I've heard of using coconut instead of PS, but not everybody likes coconut. Any other suggestions?

When doing the four support sticks in the tier-cut 1/8 inch taller than icing. This helps a lot especially for people that do not like coconut.
