If using the thin cardboards, I glue three of them together before covering.

If you can't find a cake drum, then definitely glue 3 or 4 cake boards together, then cover them with a nice contac paper (or wrapping paper, then clear contac paper, or fancifoil...

Or else, you can purchase foam core (at any office supply store or craft store) and cut it to size using a heated craft knife.

I use foam board that I buy at Michaels. I love it! I get the 3/4" thick I think - it is very strong, and cheaper than cake board. I think it is $5 for a 36x24" which I just cut to size with a serrated knife. I think they usually have it with the poster board, but if you ask I'm sure they will help you find it.

I put tiered cakes on tiles from home depot. I wait and get them on sale and cover them, that way it does not matter what they look like.
You can get them in 12X12, 14X14 & larger.
