I am making my first tiered cake... Is there a certain way to put them together or do i just stack them after i put the icing on?

I am new to this, but I know you use cake plates to seperate each tier and you also need dowel rods. Let me look and see if I can find a tutorial for you on here.

Great tutorial to share!
You can also buy the dowel rods at Lowe's or Home Depot, etc. or the packaged ones from Wilton (at Michael's; Hobby Lobby; etc.).

i use 1/4" wooden dowels from home depot. they don't waste as much cake as the hollow ones from wilton. i also stack my cakes when i get to the reception or party. i also put ps between layers to help avoid peeling icing (i don't use seperator plates on stacked cakes, just cardboard)

I used the little plastic seperators from wilton, not the hollow ones, and when my cake wasn't quite as tall as the dowels, I just used some wire cutters from the tool drawer to snip them and shorten them a little.
