Say around $150 or so?

I would charge $6.50 per serving (base price) and probably $50 for the roses and cross. If those are 3" cakes that makes it $433.50 and for 4" tall, $557.

I'm always amazed at the prices some people can get in different parts of the country!

There is one bakery in town that most consider THE bakery to go to. They do beautiful cakes and their reputation is impeccable. For that size cake in buttercream with all buttercream decorations (which are more difficult and require more time and skill imo), they charge less than $200.

I base many of my prices on their brochure prices. I can't possibly get away with charging more than they do.

I know fondant is more costly, but it's so much easier to do than buttercream that I've started not charging extra for it in most cases. The customers think they're getting a bargain (and they are) and I breathe a sigh of relief because I don't have to deal with icing with buttercream (the one thing I dislike the most about cake decorating!)

I'd charge $175 at most.

Thank you all for your comments. Hopefully one day I can charge these prices.

justme50, I also dislike working with buttercream.

i understand what you are talking about ...Is very easy to figure this out ..Count all the time you spend baking the cake...doing the buttercream..materials..decorations...and the time u spent doing the cake..Pay yourself by hour and see how much it comes to. And then see if you are getting paid for yur work or not!...

I'm definitely making money at $175 and enough to make it worth my time. But regardless, I can't charge 3 times what a brick and mortar bakery with an excellent reputation charges.

The only part of buttercream I don't like is the icing. I love making borders, roses etc...but the icing is soooo tedious!

Well....... I just started decorating cakes in Feb. of this year. It was just going to be a hobby of mine, but as more and more friends have seen my work they all want a cake. Hopefully someday this will be a full time deal for me. I love it.

I only asked her for $60.00. She paid for all the materials and gave me a little extra. I probably should have asked for more....

Don't feel bad about what you charged. Sure, it was really low, but you're just starting out and getting experience. Look at it this way...you got some valuable experience and it didn't cost you anything! I would have never had the nerve to tackle a wedding cake so soon, but you did a great job!

When I first started doing cakes and for a very long time afterwards, I refused to take money for them. My theory being, if they were free, no one could complain! Yes, I was THAT paranoid about people not liking my cakes! I got over that eventually.icon_lol.gif

Now that you've got your first one under your belt, I'd spend some time researching what the prices are in your area and start pricing a little more competitively.

You DEFINITELY should have charged more...you couldn't have made any profit on this. Even if you're only doing it as a hobby you should still consider that you should make some money off of it. I've slowly realized this over the last few months and when someone asked me for a 9" Double layer simple birthday cake for this weekend with only 3-4 small "grave stones" made from fondant I very easily said what do you want to spend when they replied enough to make it super nice I quickly said $40-50 and they said fine...I was shocked...I can honestly say that the profit on this cake is about 75%, I already have most of the materials and it shouldn't take long to decorate. My time is just as valuable as the supplies.

Just because Sams or Costco can sell a sheet cake for $16 dollars with no creativity doesn't mean everyone can...or should for that matter.

Thank you again for all your help. I live in California and as many know, you can't sell cakes from your home kitchen. I don't want to be the one to get caught, so for know I get what I can get away with. LOL!
