I am making MMF pearls from my 8mm pearl mold for some christmas cakes. Now I wanted to make them ahead of time as I have 3 cakes due all in three days. 1 x-mas eve, one x-mas day and one day after x-mas. Will they get hard and not be able to be placed on my round cakes? I dunno if they come out attached to eachother, like a string effect or will they be seperate? Any tips on making these also appreciated. I am a novice for sure and am really doing alot of first on these cakes. icon_cry.gif

Also, I wondered if I could put the gold colored lusterdust or fairy dusts in the mold to color and shine my pearls as you would pearl dusts? Will it adhere to them this way? icon_confused.gif

When I made them I brushed the dust in the mold and it did come out on the pearls.

they will get hard hard after about a week, when you try to wrap the cake, they will crack. wait till the day you decorate, it doesnt take that much time. be prepared though that the mold will leave a seam in the pearls and they will definately not look handrolled. if i were you i would do a test run just so you know what to exect. after i spent 23 dollars on mine, i was seriously disappointed, now i am back to handrolling each one. they look much better and those are easier to do in advance because after they dry for about a day, you can put them in the freezer and take them out when you're ready to decorate. after they dry you can put them a little dust in a ziplock bag and shake to dust them. if you want them painted you can add a few drops of extract or vodka and shake, then add the dust and shake again. then freeze.

When I used the mold to make gold pearls I didn't like the look and ended up putting them in a container with the gold luster dust and shake them around. Then they picked up more color.
When you take them out of the mold they will be attached like a necklace. If you want to make them ahead, you can pull them apart and roll them individually, place in a container and they will stay soft untill you are ready for them. Or you can leave them attached to each other and just place on the cake as you make the strands.

I agree with melysa, definately hand roll them. I have never had any luck with my mold - just hate that seam in it. I read somewhere (I think it was on Earlene's website) that if you want your hand-rolled pearls to be exactly the same size, use a round tip to cut the fondant and then roll them between your thumb and pointer finger. Then you put them in a jar with the luster dust and shake. I haven't tried it, but I have seen pictures where people have done it and it looks beautiful.

If you wanted to do them ahead of time you can leave them in the strand and dry them in/around the same size cake pan you will be using. That way if they dry too much they will at least be the shape you need.

I got antsy and dusted the mold with pearl dusts as I will need some regular white pearls also. They came out fine. I separated them and then rolled them in my hands to pick up more dusts and shape them. So I figure now I can put them in a covered container and then if need be redust them As far as the gold ones I'll probably make them with gold tinted MMF and then put them in a baggie with tiny bit extract and gold dusts. I'll post them to show ya! Thank you so much for help. And if anyone else has tips....PLEASE TELL ME! icon_biggrin.gif
