Cake Jacks! Hdi

For those of you that use cake jacks, can you please tell me HOW you use them?? Do you just shove them down through the cake like a dowel or do you have to "remove" some cake with a large straw or something? If you just shove them down through the cake, doesn't the smooshed cake at the bottom lessen their stability factor?? Please advise!!

Treat them exactly like you would a dowel. Just stick them down into the cake. If that bothers you, you could try pushing a straw in, then out, removing a small "plug" of cake. Then insert the cake jack.

I also just push them down in, exactly like a dowel. Haven't had any problems.

(Actually, I push them all the way down, then pull them up about an inch, set the next cake down on top and the time it takes for the weight of the cake above to push them back down gives me enough time to pull out my fingers.)
