its a gorgeous cake but i'm wondering why in the world it costs SO much

i mean 1600$ for 150 servings? i'm guessing it has to do with the quality of the ingredients rather then its design etc.

either way its beautiful

It is a gorgeous cake, but I agree, way overpriced. But, it's from a bakery in NY, and EVERYTHING is more expensive in New York. In my area we'd NEVER get anything close to that! Maybe not even half for that cake.

Much of it has to do with the fact that the cake artist is located in New York City, and the market there will bear much higher-priced cakes.

I would imagine the Overhead costs in NYC would elevate the pricing.

I looked at her site, and I would say its more about the name than anything. For me, that same cake would cost $975 so she's not THAT crazy.

It's nice, but it's not $1600 nice... for that price, it better come with a waiter to serve it, and give you the big icon_eek.gif when you eat it icon_lol.gificon_lol.gificon_lol.gif

That's only slightly over $10 a slice. If you go on Toba Garrett's website, she has cakes that sell for $20, $30 and yes, even over $60 a slice.

I've printed those cakes off and they are in my "Internet Cake Photos" books to show brides .... just in case they think my lousy three bucks a slice is too expensive!

Well, considering that a studio apartment (also known as an efficiency) costs over $3000 per month there, you can imagine what the rental price per month is on a commercial property. That, plus wages and insurances are much higher there, so if the cake artist has an assistant or decorators working for her, the cost is astronomical compared to what would be charged for that cake in other parts of the US.

That's $10.67 per serving.. not too bad really. Though it is a rather simple design.. being in the New York area doesn't hurt either. It's a high end cake made with what sounds like high end ingredients. I'd be willing to charge that much is the cake warranted it.

I am there with you guys. I don't think it looks like a $1600 cake, that's for sure. But hey, more power to them if they are getting that price. I wish I could. Do brides really pay THAT?????

Many people say I price too low. I am just starting and I think I am pricing good. When I break it down, I feel it is fair. icon_smile.gif

Mokuba satin ribbon is probably the best there is. It's a dream to sew with. icon_smile.gif

I've heard Toba's name mentioned here several times so I did a google to see what it's all about. I was surprised by the cost of cookies especially. $125.00 for a 2 serving cookie!!

I think you also have to take into consideration the type of clients who live in these upscale cities that would buy these cakes. Someone I know went to NYC and had to pay almost $20 for a banana split!! Too them $1600 is nothing for even the simplest looking cake. Ever watch Platinum Weddings? There was a couple whose cake served less than 200 people and cost $5000!!! It was a beautiful cake, but $5000!!! My wedding dress only cost $500 and that was quite some time ago.
