Finally used up all my crappy Wilton red coloring and ordered Americolor. Wasn't sure what to get so I got Red-Red and Super-Red. What's the difference and which should I use for a good color for Santa hats?

I have both, and I'd say that super red is a little darker with blue tones, the red-red has more of an orangey hue (but still definately red!). For the bright Santa red, either will be fine. I find I need to use less of the super red to get the red I need too. Hope that helps!

That's perfect, thanks! I'll give it a try and see what happens!

I also use the americolor. What i have been doing is puting fushia in my icing then using the super red. I got a more vibrant red that popped out on santa clause and candy canes. have fun!!!! icon_biggrin.gif

I used Super Red recently to make an Elmo cake and ended up using too much of it because the next day Elmo got so dark. icon_sad.gif

What red can be used that does not have a bitterness to it? I had people to say that Wilton red I used has a bitterness to it.

The Americolors really are the best, because you don't have to use a lot to get a real red, you never get to the stage of bitter tasting icing. I highly recommend making your icing at least one day ahead, and stopping adding colouring when you are one or two shades lighter than you want, because it will darken overnight! Hope that helps
