I was curious to find out how I would go about finding out if some business names I have in mind are possible. I would assume you can't use the same name as another business in your state. I hope this makes sense.

Check your state website, which usually has a .gov ending. There's usually some part in there regarding business -- go in there and look around for registering business names (or something to that effect.) Type in the name you want and it will tell you if anyone else has that name. Hope that helps some! 
I checked my Secretary of State website. There was an link for small businesses. There I could run down my list of names and see what was registered and change things around by taking or adding little words.
I'm not sure if it's the same for all states. But it's worth a try.
