How Do I Use Wilton Shimmer Dust??
Decorating By jessieb578 Updated 11 Dec 2006 , 4:39pm by springlakecake
I need silver fondant also, but don't have access to Luster Dust - so I bought Wilton Shimmer Dust thinking it would do the same thing, but found that is SO NOT true! When I tried to paint with it, it got goopy and I think it won't work well with my fondant by just dusting it on - will it stay on??
Does anyone know how to use the Wilton Shimmer Dust to make fondant silver or should I travel an hour to buy it?? I need it for a cake in a week!!
Thanks!!
To apply shimmer dust to fondant, just sprtiz the area where you need the dust with a little bit of water and then sprinkle the dust on. That is all you can do--yeah, it does not mix with alcohol and extracts like luster dust. If you can, I would suggest driving the hour to get the real deal--I think you may be disappointed with the shimmer dust.
Seems like this is the week for Shimmer Dust!
I posted a very similar question earlier, here's the thread:
Drive for the real luster dust! It's worth it!
Good luck!

Get in the car, girl. Lustre dust is awesome. While you're out, get a mini-bottle of Smirnoff 100, which is a 100 proof vodka (most others are 80 proof.) Everclear (grain alcohol) is better but I haven't been able to find a mini-bottle. Mix drops at a time with the dust, then paint away. The alcohol evaporates, leaves no taste. People also use lemon extract, which also has a high alcohol content.
There's a site, cakedeco.com, that has a starter kit with 12 colors for $24. (It's $2.50 to $3.50 in the stores. It's a TEENY bottle, but it goes a long way.)
Cakedeco does require a $50 minimun order, but there are lots of other sites out there too.
Personally I would try and order the luster dust now and hope it arrives in time. I have put orders into cakesbysam and countrykitchens and received my order the very next day. After you order I would get in the car and take the shimmer dust back to the store and get your money back.
