Freaking Because Didn't Realize Cake Would Be So Heavy...

I just finished my first wedding cake. It's three tiers, stacked, 14", 10" and 6". I placed it on a Wilton board and just tried to slide it over on the table and realized how heavy it is. OH MY GOD!!! How in the world is the board going to support the weight? Should I have placed it on something sturdier like plywood?? I am really worried now.... Any suggestions, advice, words of sympathy??? ![]()

How thick is the board you have it on? Did you make a drum of several boards? That will help, but a cake that big I normally put on a wooden board. My husband normally cuts them out for me, but in a pinch, I've used those cheapie wooden tabletops that are meant to have a tablecloth over them, the kind that is just a wooden circle with three legs that screw into the bottom. Remove the sockets from underneath and cover it with cake foil like you would normally do on a cake drum.
I would love to tell you I've never made that same mistake, but it would be such a lie..... Be careful moving it and let us know how it turns out!

The foam boards. Some suppliers call them drums. They are about 1/4" thick covered in silver.
Where is the cake going? Are you having to deliver it somewhere?
I would probably get a piece of plywood to transport it. I think if you can get it on the stronger board (keeping it on the board you already have it on) then it will be fine to deliver it that way, then you can kind of slide it off the plywood after you get it to its final destination.
I know how heavy that is. I have done 2 cakes that big and was so tempted to stack them before delivery, but after I felt how heavy the bottom tier was, decided that it would be WAY too heavy to transport it that way.
I wouldn't unstack them. You will just mess them up( or at least I would).
Do you have someone who could help you lift it?
I normally stack cakes that large on site... I agree with 'missmersh' about transporting with a piece of wood underneath. Just make sure it won't slide off of the wood during transport (even if it's heavy, this can happen if you are driving & apply the brakes, etc...). Good luck!
Lowe's has wooden rounds precut. I use them over and over. For this time, I would get some thick plywood you can slide it onto.
Thanks ladies. I'll discuss with DH which route to take. The plywood sounds good to me. I hope we don't have a long walk to get this monstrousity from the car to the reception hall. I hope DH's back holds up.
Between this and the all the cake I threw out and had to bake over because of the FDA recall on white chocolate, this cake will be the death of me. ![]()
Smile!!
It'll be okay. Promise.
Just think. Rebaking the cakes let you make them even yummier by using Ghiradelli. Plus, you've stacked them so you're almost done! Whoohoo.
Is it feasible to unstack them or will that ruin the decoration? Did you already insert your center dowel? I would suggest unstacking them and transport them separately to the site. This avoids your need for an extra board. If it's too late for that, then I would run out to Lowe's and get a piece of plywood cut and wrap it in wrapping paper or pretty foil. Then have your DH hold it level to the counter/table and slide the cake onto it. I would guess that monster is around 60 pounds. (I was curious and weighed a cake once
).
It's almost over!!!
