I'm making the Quick Caramel Frosting recipe from the Cake Mix Doctor.How do I keep lumps from forming when I add the sugar?

Yes. I even tried sifting the sugar directly into the saucepan while stirring, but that seems to take too long and the frosting starts to harden.
