Has anyone ever totally screwed up a cake, or know someone who did to the point where it was not deliverable?

What do you do in that situation??

I always worry about this, cakes are so delicate sometimes..and i just wonder what you do when someone orders a cake for a wedding or a birthday and they are totally counting on your one and only cake, then it gets to the day of and something goes totally wrong??

Offering their money back just doesnt seem good enough...i know i would be floored if i had a wedding cake ordered, or birthday, and it didnt show up and they offered my money back!!

Never ahppened knock on wood! The cake I did today was completely assembled-all four tiers. I have had a client ask if I have a back up person.

I don't know your answer. But I have done a few for gifts and was totally icon_redface.gif about how they looked. My nieces was my most recent. I was hurried. It isn't in my photos cause it has some bad words on it. It was something she said at about age 2. That is a family thing. The bad words weren't the problem. It just didn't turn out the way I wanted it. And I was so icon_redface.gif by what I created. But she totally loved it icon_eek.gif So I don't know what I would do. I could tell by her voice she wasn't just putting me on. She really did love it even though I thought it SUCKED. I would love some input also.

Yes, this happened to me.

I'm of the belief that showing up empty-handed is not an option. My job is to make sure my client is covered by doing whatever is necessary.

There's no step-by-step for this because every disastrous situation is completely different. But this is where your creativity and ability to think outside the box comes in. When this happened to me the first thing I did was completely erase from my mind all of the previous long hours I'd spent on her chosen design because that was a done deal. It wasn't happening. Then I thought about her wedding theme and looked at what I had on hand and tried to think of ways I could make the two fit together. Not slapped together, but fit together in a totally new way.

I showed up with half the amount of cake she requested and a completely different display & design but it worked with her wedding and she was happy.

The whole refund thing can be dealt with later, but I think you need to show up with something for your client.

I agree snowboarder! I think showing up empty handed would be terrifying!

I usually make cakes one at a time with a month or so in between and I dont tend to have extra stuff made on hand... and I am always wondering what I could do if I was in a time crunch and something crazy happened! I guess just stay up every waking hour and try to get it finished!
