You can use square layers. I think the 8 x 12 cut into an 8 x 8.

Does it have to be solid cake. If not use a cake dummy for the bottom half.

Figure the dimensions then make the cake roughly to scale. So if it was 8W x 10L x 6H then make it roughly 9x13x7 (or so ) That would be 3 or 4 layers of 9x13 (cuz it is what you have). Can't wait to see the finished product!

If you want to make it smaller cut the 9x13 in half and make it 6.5x 9 x5 and 2 or 3 layers.

I agree. It's a square so definitely use a square pan. You will want it at least 8" high for the square box but it looks like the lid addition makes it 2" higher. Maybe make 4 8x8 for the base and an extra 2" for the lid.

square or retangle either or is fine. Im thinking the rectangle might be easier to achieve than the square. This is driving me crazy!!!!!!!!

Ok I think Im going to go with 2 9x13 cut in half, if all 4 pieces are to high, Im going to only use the 3 pieces.

If I use buttercream, how will i get the scroll work colored with the luster dust?

Or do you think that I should use fondant and airbrush it black and then paint using the gold dust.

Once I airbrush it black will I have a hard time adding the scroll work? ....

I know Im asking alot of question, Im just really unsure on what to do. I see it in my head, just not sure If I can bring it all together.
I would also love to recd, at least a B on my presentaion for class..Thanks to those that have helped so far.

How about using black fondant to begin with. Then make a stencil for the gold accents.
