A friend told me you can't paint on royal ... is this so or do you have to use a specific technique/material? She said it melts....

depends on what you are using. yes, i imagine if you use something like food coloring it would disolve. but most of the time when people refer to painting on royal, it is with an alcohol or extract and luster/ petal dust. the alcohol evaporates so quickly that you are left with a dry colored surface. its an awesome technique.

you could pre tint the icing with wilton colors, i do it all the time. but if you are talking paint them...they would remain sticky and not fully dry so if you touched the surface, they would mess the finish .
