I have just recently started using the fondant recipe provided on the Wilton website. I've started to notice that after the first dayor two at room temperature, it starts to emit this very chemical smell. I think it might be coming from the unflavored gelatin called for by the recipe. Any suggestions or has anyone else experienced this?
Try the marshmallow fondant recipe here in the recipe section. It is cheaper, tastes better and about as easy to work with. I think youll find a big difference. HTH
Eek, sounds wierd! But I can't imagine a chemical kind of smell being a product of unflavored gelatin. Not sure what in the recipe might be doing that, but the gelatin seems as unlikely as anything. bleh.
I use the fondant recipe from the Colette books (gelatin, glycerin, light karo syrup, flavoring, powdered sugar) and I've never experienced a chemical smell. But I do have a notoriously bad sense of smell.
I find this fondant easier to make and use than the MMF, personally.
