I love this website.............I've just signed up to take Wiltons Course I. My mother-in-law and I have been messing around with fondant for about 6mo. now, we've made 5 cakes and have learned something from each one.
What can I expect from these classes? Are there any other classes that I should take? I'm really interested in learning a lot and hopefully get good enough to start a business with my mother-in-law someday. ![]()
I think it's to your benefit to take them. I've had a local bakery send me 2 of her workers in her shop to my classes because she felt she wanted them to learn it the correct way and her way wasn't necessarily the correct way.
Wilton course 1 class gives basic instructions on prepping the cake for decorating. This includes methods of leveling, torting, and icing the cake. You also learn basic decorating skills, such as star, shell, piping figures, drop flower, sweet pea and rose and transfering patterns to cake with piping gel. You'll practice using the Wilton method buttercream method ( not the best tasting, but easier to practice with and if you use butter extract and vanilla extract it tastes better ). I'm an instructor for Wilton and also try to fit in the coloring of icing using the two tone icing and striping of the bag, which Wilton says to just show. I find more is learned when it is actually done. Course 2 teaches the more involved royal icing flowers, basketweave and color flow. Fondant and tiered cakes are covered in Course 3. Hope you enjoy your class
