I tried finding my "artistic niche" for years. I even spent tons of money and got a degree in interior design. The only thing I got out of it was a knowledge of scale and color theory, which helps me with my cakes. I took the wilton classes for fun 2 years ago. I've always made cool cakes for my kids, but wanted to learn the tricks of the trade. I had no idea i had a talent. Within a year, I was getting calls from strangers who had heard about me and wanted wedding cakes, etc. Since it's illegal to make and sell cakes from home in florida, and I was ready to go back to work, I opened a little boutique about 2 months ago. I've been busy with work ever since.
I got a plug in the newspaper last week, and now a radio station wants me to buy a vendor booth at their yearly bridal show (free radio plugs!).
It drives me crazy when people won't cut and eat my cakes. I do love the way they look, and I love all the oooo's and aahhhh's, but I want them to taste it as well. When nobody will cut it, I will. They soon get over the looks and indulge in the taste.
I personally hate cake anymore, but everyone tells me that mine taste great. So I'll just keep going until they either stop buying, or I get carpal tunnel!
Well, I've only been decorating cakes for a little over a year now, but deep down inside, I was always saying to myself, "I want to learn how to decorate cakes." I've always had a little artistic ability-crosstiching ever since I was about 11, knitting-still not very good at that, and gardening-I love the flowers and other plants-I got the "green thumb" from my grandmother. She was always out in the yard working with her plants-she also worked with ceramics-had her own keel (spelling?) to make her ceramic figures and painted them. She was really good. Later on, she got into porcelain. I never have really cared to paint, but I guess most of my artistic abilty comes from my grandmother.
Anyway, last year, I got to thinking about taking cake decorating classes, so I looked in the phone book to see if there would be anything. The only place that offered decorating classes was a little locally-owned craft store about 45 minutes away from where I live. Nothing here in my little town. So I called and took Wilton Courses 1, 2, and 3. Now I am waiting to take the gumpaste class whenever she gets her supplies in.
I love cake decorating and really only do them for friends, family, church get-togethers, etc. I don't really care to eat cake (not big on sweets), but I love to make and decorate them and then getting the oohh's and aahh's.
One lady at my church is always fascinated by my cakes and keeps telling me I should go into business with it. Well, I don't feel that I am that
good, but, then again, I would be the only bakery in town, besides Wal-Mart and the other 3-4 grocery stores. I would really like to go into my own business, but I don't have the money, don't know how business would really be (would someone buy my cake or a cheap Wal-Mart cake?),
customer's complaining. etc., etc. I really enjoy decorating my cakes. My husband told me today (I was working on the puppy dog cake in my photos) that he was amazed at how I did cakes. I told him that I got the instructions from CC-I could never think of that on my own. He said, "It seems like it just comes naturally to you-you can look at a cake, sit down, and do it! I sure couldn't do that!" I told him thank you! I was very flattered!
I sure do feel good when people compliment me on my cakes, crosstich (my husband always points out my 4 crosstich pictures I have framed on the wall to people that come to our house-I guess he likes to brag on me)
Anyway, enough about me-need to go to bed!
