I am in awe of the cake in the link. Can anyone help with instructions on how to stack a cake like this?

I have PM'd the artist. No reply (as of yet), as I am experiencing more of lately.
Well, if those are real cake layers (and not dummies) they used dowels and cakeboards.
Here's another example:

(The hour glass tier is thought to be a cake dummy.)

I think JanH's link is what you will need to rely on. Isn't she great? If you look at the cake you asked about, it looks like you could put a long dowel all the way from the top to the bottom of the cake to pass through all layers. It seems that they were stacked through that point so it could be stabilised like that. Obviously you still need to dowel and stack your cakes on boards like usual, but also put the dowel in. It is possible to screw a dowel into the base board and stack your cakes over it. You just need to make holes in each board before putting the cake on to 'thread' them over the dowel.
I hope that makes sense. Here is a link that shows what I mean about a dowel being screwed into the base board: http://www.how2cakes.com/ go to 3d cakes and look at the veggie cake.
I have probably confused you more now
, I guess at least I know what I mean. Maybe someone else can help explain it better!!
Here's a link to Colette Peters' Polka Dot Crooked Fun Cake:

Think you can better visualize where dowels go in this view.

Thanks so much for all of your help. I am going try my hand at this.
