I have seen in the gallery here some pictures of cookie Christmas trees. Is there an instruction on how to make them anywhere? I have been digging around a bit but cannot find anything on how they are constructed. I can see that the trees are star cookies graduated in size stacked on top of each other, but how are they held together? And would you ice the cookies before stacking, or after? I was thinking cookie trees would make nice teacher gifts for Christmas.

I just did these! For teachers! They are more work than thought. I baked the cookies and "iced" them with green fondant the minute they came out of the oven. Or you could use royal or I bet even buttercream--just let it crust a bit.

You then take the base cookie and then top it with anothet cookie cattycorner. I used anotinia74's royal to glue them together.

Afterwards I used some royal for the "snow" on the edges and some used jimmies and some red hots.

I also put some royal on the base(I used a plate) to glue down the first cookie so the whole thing would not slide.

I agree with Baking Girl. They are more work than you think. I made one for my principal [I am a teacher] she and everyone loved it. It was well worth the effort.

I've been wanting to try this...could anyone tell me the size of the cutter and how many of each are needed? Also, do they just stick together, or are they doweled or otherwise supported? Thanks, PAT

Hey Doug - great advice! I have a 4 year old DGD who stays with us every day , and she fits your description exactly!~~ Yesterday, she cried when our DD told her she had to go home, 'cause she "needed" to stay here to be Gammy's taste tester!!! Ah, how boring the world would be without 4 year olds and puppies! icon_wink.gif PAT

shebaden,
I used the 6 cutter set from Wilton I got at an after 4th sale at HL. My largest cookie was 5.5inch. Use a glob of royal for the glue. I did not dowel them and they worked out fine. Or buttercream.

And if you have any questions--at any hour--Doug's the man--lol. He answered all my crazy questions this past weekend. And Doug, I now have an order fo 8 more trees from a friend who I gave the last one to just b/c I thought she'd like it!!! And I am not even in business! icon_wink.gif

Have fun creating!

Thanks, Cakeatopia and Doug - that's just what I needed to know. I do have that graduated set of star cutters. Just 2 more questions: (1) Did you use a sugar cookie or gingerbread cookie recipe, and if so which one? and (2) How many layers did you make? If you can tell me those last few things, I can supply the 4 year old!!! icon_rolleyes.gif Thanks - PAT

I have the 6 set. Used 2 of the 3 larger ones. Then one of the last 4 with the smallest being the star that stands up on the top.

I used the No Fail Sugar Cookie recipe since it has been good to me LOads and everyone loves the cookie. I also add a bit of lemon zest when I use vanilla extract. I'd love to ginger but this morn, one of ds's teachers RAVED about hers and how good it was and ordered 5!!!
So not changing a thing except for the plates I used. She said I could use anything and 99centr only has some realy cute ones. Basket bags too--2pk for 99cents and cute cute cute designs.

I also think once you do a set, it will get easier--hoping--since you will have yor grooove--lol

people are impressed and that is kinda fun too!

Thank you all for your helpful replies. Just another question Cakeatopia, you say you ice them using fondant, do you cut the fondant using the same cutter as the cookie and just let it 'melt' onto the cookie when it comes out of the oven?

bakinggirl--YES I actually cut the fondant out first, then set aside covered as not to dry out. Then cut the cookies and the sec they came out of the oven, I put the fondant on and it melts on and very nicely and soooo smoothly(thanks to prettycake for the suggestion--others do this too but her post was the first I read when I first came here).

I made the seven trees and cut all seven of the same sizes at once. next time I will cut all 9 sized fondant pieces out first so I will have a tree set together so I won't be searching for the pieces as the cookies set. If that makes sense.
