Hello everyone! I'm a newbie with a question. I desperately need help making a pillow cake. I want the cake to have a quilted pattern to it, and tassels. I might be a bit ambitious but we'll see. I also wanted to know what cake recipe everyone uses for cakes like this. This cake is for my mother's birthday, and although she will appreciate the design, her main focus will be on the taste and richness of the cake. Any help will definitely be appreciated!!!

Welcome to CC. There is a tutorial on the front page under Articles titled How to make a pillow cake. Good Luck & posta picture when you're done. I haven't done a pillow cake. If you look in the Galleries section & find one you like. PM the person who made it; I'm sure they will help you.

I use whatever flavor cake, but it does help to have a firmer cake (not like a sponge) since you need to carve the cake. You can do quilted looks a number of ways--either using a tool to create the indents or putting on addition pieces of fondant accents.

recipe for cake? if you want scratch you can do a good butter cake. It should be firm enough for carving

one of my fav butter cakes is below:

1.5 c butter
3 c sugar
5 eggs
3c flour
3/4 tsp baking pwdr (I usually use 1 tsp)
1.5 tsp vanilla
1c milk
1/2 tsp salt (I never use salt, but I use salted butter)

cream butter/sugar. add eggs one at a time. mix flour and baking powder (and salt if used) together. add to egg/sugar mixture alternately with milk beginning and ending with flour.

I bake everything at 325. time depends on what size ur baking. I love this recipe with strawberry mousse.

I have made a few cakes with small 'quilts' on them. I actually took a quilt class and we made a rail fence quilt. I used fondant and pieced together the same was a quilt.
